Penang Open Angling and Competition and Carnival 2008

In conjunction with the Pesta Pulau Pinang 2008, the Penang State Government under the auspices of the Penang State Youth and Sports Committee together with the Persatuan Memancing Pulau Pinang (PMPP) will be organising the Penang Open Fishing Carnival 2008. This event shall include a fishing competition which is in line with the State¡¯s policy of encouraging healthy living through outdoor sports.

Both the State Government and the PMPP sees angling as not only a healthy sport, but as a tool to develop family values by encouraging angling as a family activity. Anglers are encouraged to bring their whole family and friends to the Carnival as there will be a host of activities organised throughout the day which shall include games and other entertainment within the event site as well as in Queensbay Mall

Among some of the values of Fishing or Angling as a sport are as follows :

   1.  Fishing/Angling is a good alternative as an outdoor sport for those who do not wish or cannot
participate in other more physically demanding sport such as football, hockey, basketball etc.

   2. Fishing/Angling takes place in a healthy environment.

   3. Fishing/Angling is a socially inclusive sport in that it encourages social contact within persons and groups
of all ages and races and social status.

   4. Fishing/Angling is proven over time to reduce youth participation in crime and other undesirable
activities such as illegal street racing.

   5. Fishing/Angling creates awareness to the need to protect the environment.

   6. Fishing/Angling is accessible physically challenged persons.
